April 2025 - The Bugle

COMMANDER'S CALL

Victor de la Rosa,
Commander, American Legion Post 132

Greetings all:

I'd like to thank Susie Flores and the Auxiliary for all the work they did for the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Dinner on Saturday March 29th. It was a great turnout and made our Post shine.

I'd also like to thank Frank Cook for all his work on the first of three Red Cross blood drives the Post is hosting this year. The first one took place March 30. We have two more blood drive on the schedule, so save the dates: Sunday, August 3, 2025 and Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Spring is upon us, and that means in April we will have first nominations for officers for our board. If you want to be involved, being on the board is a great way to help out. The Legionnaires general meeting will be on April 10 at 7PM.

On another note, Fleet Week will be coming to the City of Orange on Thursday, May 22. Our post will be hosting a lunch for the active duty Servicemen that will be participating. Look for information coming out to volunteer and help the post put it together.

Don’t forget to check the calendar on our website at orangepost132.com.

Thank you

Victor de la Rosa,
Commander, Post 132

ADJUTANT'S AGENDA

Brian Johnson
Adjutant, American Legion Post 132

Happy April and welcome Spring.  April and May represent two of the most important months in our Legion year.  If you only attend one or two meetings a year, Please make the April and May meetings.  We are a member driven organization and that means your input is very important.  We need to hear from you and we need your involvement so that we can continue to meet the needs of veterans in our community and continue to provide our members with activities and events that we all enjoy.  The April Meeting will be on Thursday, April 10th at 7pm.

At our April General Meeting, we will accept first nominations for officers for the 25/26 Legion year.  At the May meeting, we will accept second nominations and hold our election of officers.

The following elected officer positions will be open for nomination:

  • Commander - Our CEO, ringmaster, Trail Boss etc.
  • 1st Vice Commander - Our Membership guru and the Commander's right hand person.
  • 2nd Vice Commander - This is Ways and Means.  The coordinator for our great activities and events.  This is a role where you can let your creative side run wild.
  • 3rd Vice Commander - Americanism, Children and Youth.  This is our coordinator for our Scouts, youth related activities, and activities like Legion Baseball
  • Finance Officer - This is our fiscal and financial guru.  The Finance Officer keeps the Commander out of trouble.
  • Executive Committee - four positions.  Our Executive Committee helps us manage projects, oversees the club activities and provides advice and input regarding operation of the Post.

To be nominated for an elected position or appointed to a non-elected role such as Adjutant, Sgt at Arms, Chaplin, or Judge Advocate, you need to be a member in good standing at our Post.  That means that your dues are paid current and you are eligible to be a member of the American Legion.  Typically, that means we need to confirm your service and discharge status.  Contact one of the officers if you have questions about qualifications to serve or the roles and responsibilities of eleted and appointed officers.

From a personal perspective, serving as an officer has been rewarding and interesting.  I encourage you to consider a leadership role at your Post.

Until next time, I will see you down at the Post.

"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything."
— William Shakespeare

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

AUXILIARY ACTION

Diana Trujillo
Event Planner, American Legion Post 132

Welcome April,

March just flew by!

First, thank you to those Auxiliary members that volunteered to help with the National Presidents dinner, especially Cheryl Sepulveda who was my right-hand woman! It was such a joy to meet Trish Ward and hear her speak.

Another round of applause to those members who helped during the St. Paddy’s Day event in the kitchen.  You all helped make it successful!

Our auxiliary outing was so much at Wine & Wax!  The candles we made are organic and smell amazing.  If you haven’t had a chance to visit them, I recommend stopping by.

Every year we have been blessed to host the Welcome home Vietnam Veterans dinner.  This year it was held on Saturday March 29th.  Thank you, Susie Flores, for leading this committee and to all our members who helped make it a success.  It was a beautiful event!

And we had a great time on our March dinner. Thank you to everyone who helped.

Here are the Auxiliary activities for April:

  • Saturday April 12th – We have a special event for you!  The Bling Lady is coming to our post to visit the Auxiliary from 1 -3 pm.  She will have samples of tee shirts that we can order.  You can bring your own shirt or order through her.

  • Saturday April 19th – Kids Easter Party from 12-2pm

We are women empowering women!

“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.”

SONS SPOTLIGHT

James Gomez
Commander, Sons of the American Legion Post 132

Paris Hospitalized After Accident

Our fellow Son, Paris Davis, is currently hospitalized at UCI Medical Center in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle while cycling recently. Paris sustained multiple broken bones and spinal fractures. Please keep him in your thoughts. As many know, Paris has been a dedicated member who also handled cleaning duties for the Post and set up our monthly meeting room. We'll discuss ways to support him at our next meeting.

Thank You to Our March Volunteers

A big thank you to all who volunteered for our March dinner and breakfast events: Kevin P Anderson, Doug Casady, Tommy Dees, Pierre Duco, Tom Duprey, Ben Farner, Justin Fawver, Mark Fawver, Terry Hildenbrand, Mike Holmes, David Laguna, Michael Moss, Jonathan Stone and Kevin Wagner. Your dedication and hard work keep our Post events running smoothly!

Sons Support Post Operations

The Sons have contributed $750 to cover backroom expenses for the Post's weekly dinner and breakfast programs, helping with essentials like plates, napkins, and salad dressings. Additionally, we've donated $100 toward the Post's upcoming ice cream machine.

Charter Draped in Honor of Toby De Leon

At our March meeting, we draped the charter in honor of our departed member, Toby de Leon. We will be undraping the charter at our April meeting on Tuesday, April 8, at 6pm.

Welcome New Members

We're pleased to welcome our newest members who were voted in unanimously at our March meeting: Roger Sprig, Bruce Shanahan, David Ramirez, and John Wilson.

Membership Renewal Update

Our membership renewal currently stands at 81% of goal. We need 42 more members to renew or sign up to reach our 100% target. Please contact Mike Holmes with any membership questions.

Officer Nominations Coming in April

At our April meeting, on Tuesday, April 8 at 6pm, we'll be having first nominations for the 2025-2026 Officers. If you'd like to see things done differently, this is the perfect time to instigate change by stepping into a new role. And don't think you'll upset or offend me if you'd like to run for Sons Commander – If the membership votes for change, I promise to hand over the gavel with a smile!

Friday Night Dinner - April 4, 2025

Our upcoming dinner is Friday, April 4, from 6pm to 7:30pm (or until food runs out). Since it's still Lent, we'll be offering Fish & Chips for a $15 donation or steak dinner for a $20 donation. I'll be out of town, but our usual Friday night crew has everything covered – and I'm willing to bet the dinner will run even more efficiently without me getting in the way!

No Sons Breakfast in April

Please note there will be NO Sons Breakfast on April 20, as it falls on Easter Sunday and the Post will be closed. No breakfast volunteers are needed this month.
